Firstly, approaches to defining and asesssing soil quality are discussed, and a set of basic soil quality indicators and their suitability criteria are defined. The proposed physical, chemical and biological characteristics to be included as basic indicators are also outlined. These form the background to the development of mathematical relationships as an approach to the construction of a soil quality index, consisting of a function of six specific soil quality elements. Each of these is in turn evaluated with regard to five specific soil functions, which define the capacity of soil to provide a medium for plant growth and biological activity, regulate and partition water flow through the environment, and serve as an effective environmental filter. -J.W.Cooper

... Soil quality is dynamic and often assessed based on soil function (Doran & Parkin, 1996;Simeon et al., 2023), to ascertain whether it is improving, stable or declining with soil use Essien et al., 2024b;Akata et al., 2024b;Enyong, et al.,2021). This is because it is deemed important for the assessment of the extent of land degradation or amelioration, and for identifying management practices for sustainable land use (Sam et al., 2025;Akpan et al., 2025;Ben et al., 2024;Essien et al., 2025). ...

... Soil quality is defined as the capacity of soil to function within ecosystem boundaries, sustain biological productivity, maintain environmental quality, and promote plant and animal health (Doran and Parkin 1994;Zhang et al. 2019b). The change in soil quality index (SQI) is complex; it can be used as a parameter that synthesizes many indicators to judge the development of soil and identify the main influencing factors to facilitate future management and operation (Zhao et al. 2022a). ...
