The Langmuir phosphate adsorption maximum xm ranged from 278 to 1 316 mg P kg⁻¹ from 28 Malawi soils, and was well correlated with the Bache and William's phosphate sorption index x/log c(P 0.001). The percentage clay and the extractable aluminium and iron contents accounted for, respectivley, 52, 75 and 83% of the total variation in x, and 56, 61 and 71% of the variation in x/log c. The addition of soil variables such as aluminium, clay, organic carbon, and pH, when Fe was already in the regression model, removed very little of the unexplained variation in either xm of x/log c. -from Author
