The group commonly referred to as "Heterocera" encompasses approximately 147,415 species of nocturnal Lepidoptera (Amarillo, 2000), including the Saturniidae family, which is characterized by large-sized moths with an estimated 1,200-1,300 species worldwide (Heppner, 1991), 850 of which are found in the Neotropics (Scoble, 1992).
