To study the chemical constituents of Vernonia chunii of Hainan province, the constituents were separated and purified by column chromatography with macroporous adsorption resin Diaion HP-20, Sephadex LH-20, Toyopearl HW-40(C), MCI Gel CHP-20, RP-18 and normal phase silica gel. Their structures were identified on the basis of physiochemical properties and spectral methods ( 1H NMR 13C NMR distorsionless enharrrecment by polarization transfer (DEPT), 1H- 1H correlation speclroscopy ( 1H- 1H COSY), helernuclear single quantum correlation (HSQC), heternuclear multiple bond correlation (HMBC), ESI-MS, IR). Seven compounds were isolated and identified as; 3, 2′-bis (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-5, 3′-dihydroxy-6,7-combine dihydropyran-3,4- dihydro-benzopyrone( I ), I, 3-di-o-caffeoylquinicacid (II), 1, 5-di-o-caffeoylquinicacid (III), l-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2,3-dimethanol-6,7- dimethoxy-l, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydronaphthalene(IV), Chlo-rogenic acid(V), Caffeic acid(VI)and Ferulic acid(VII). Compound I is a new compound, the other componuds were isolated from this plant for the first time.
