Companion volumes 'Classic Readings on Monster Theory' and 'Primary Sources on Monsters' gather a wide range of readings and sources to enable us to see and understand what monsters can show us about what it means to be human. The first volume introduces important modern theorists of the monstrous and aims to provide interpretive tools and strategies for students to use to grapple with the primary sources in the second volume, which brings together some of the most influential and indicative monster narratives from the West.

... Despite the fruitful connections between medieval practices and modern fan fiction, critiques persist within medievalist scholarship. Scholars such as J.R.R. Tolkien (1965) and, more recently, scholars like Emma E. O'Connor (2021) express concerns regarding the oversimplification of complex medieval literary cultures by Fan Studies scholars. This dialogue, however, has fostered valuable discussions about the nature of readership and creativity's role in textual interpretation, further enriching both fields. ...

... All these publications agree: there is something queer about the Grendelkin. Queer theory may offer reconsiderations of the monster's cultural and narrative significance, which, as Tolkien (1936) claimed, are fundamental to the poem's meaning. The present interpretations imagine the Grendelkin's ambivalently gendered bodies and their social exclusion pose a challenge to early medieval England's norms. ...

... Each spring, it signals its renewal, and even when cut down, it regrows. In Tolkien's legendarium (Tolkien, 1998;1999;2008;2012a;2012b), trees also serve as potent symbols of renewal and moral compass. As in the imagery of the White Tree of Gondor, a flourishing tree reflects divine favour and the restoration of hope, while a withered or corrupted tree, like those seen in Mordor, signifies moral decay and destruction. ...

... Just as Bilbo made the journey to the Lonely Mountain and back again [74], so has the progenitor cell hypothesis made a figurative journey back into favor after a decade of relative discredit. In the same vein, we now see ductal progenitor cells as the protagonists of two biological journeys: from differentiated cells to facultative progenitors and back again as differentiated cells; and from multipotent embryonic progenitors to differentiated cells and back again as facultative progenitors. ...

... Gawain's imperfection, marked by his oscillation between the pentangle and the girdle, contrasts sharply with the idealized hero of traditional romances. As Tolkien (1975) observes, this portrayal of a flawed hero, rather than an infallible ideal, offers a more nuanced view of human character and makes a significant departure from conventional representations (p. 16). ...
