A new picosecond lifetime measurement system developed at UNISOR was used to determine the half-life of the well-deformed [Formula: see text] levels in ¹⁸⁸ Hg and ¹⁸⁶ Hg. The half-life values were measured to be 204±45 ps in ¹⁸⁸ Hg and ≤52 ps in ¹⁸⁶ Hg. The corresponding values of ρ ² (E0)×10 ³ , obtained from the partial half-lives, were [Formula: see text] and ≥32, respectively. Additionally, the half-lives of the [Formula: see text] levels were determined to be 141±31 ps in ¹⁸⁸ Hg and 48±27 ps in ¹⁸⁶ Hg.

In an experiment carried out at the 4π Ge detector facility Gammasphere the yields of ternary fission events of 252Cf accompanied by the emission of He, Be and C LCPs were measured. For the first time independent yields were measured for 59 pairs of secondary fragments of the He ternary fission and for many fission fragments detected together with the He, Be and C LCPs. With a reasonable assumption that the detected LCPs predominantly are 4He, 10Be and 14C their yields and the charge distributions of fission fragments were conjointly analyzed in terms of the ``energy cost'' concept first suggested by Halpern.

The hot bimodal fission of 252Cf is reexamined with new high-statistics data. We constructed a γ-γ-γ coincidence cube for binary fission and LCP-gated γ-γ matrix for ternary fission. By identifying the secondary fission fragments from their γ-ray transitions, we measured the yields for various fission splits. The normal neutron yield distribution is found to be Gaussian for Xe-Ru. However, the binary fission split of Ba-Mo is found to exhibit a bimodal neutron distribution with the “hot mode” corresponding to ≈3.1% of the total yield. In α ternary fission, the first measurements of yields for specific fission splits are presented. The Te-α-Ru and Xe-α-Mo neutron yields fit well with a single mode, but the Ba-α-Zr split shows evidence for an enhanced hot mode with an intensity of ≈13.8% of the normal mode.

For the study of 252Cf ternary fission measurement was performed using Gammasphere and eight DeltaE-E silicon particle telescopes. Gamma ray spectra were investigated for the ternary fission accompanied by helium, beryllium, and carbon light charged particles (LCPs) emitted with kinetic energy more than 9, 21, and 32 MeV, respectively. For the first time fragment independent yields were measured and fragment charge distributions were obtained for ternary fission accompanied by the helium, beryllium, and carbon LCPs Angular momentums of the 144Ba, 140Xe, and 100Zr fission fragments were determined, when these nuclei appeared in different fission modes.

For the first time, average angular momenta of the ternary fission fragments 100, 102Zr, 106Mo, 144, 146Ba and 138, 140, 142Xe from the α-accompanied fission of 252Cf were obtained from relative intensities of prompt γ-ray transitions with the use of the statistical model calculation. Average values of the angular momenta were compared with the corresponding values for the same fission fragments from the binary fission of 252Cf. Results indicate the presence of a decreasing trend in the average values of angular momenta induced in ternary fission fragments compared to the same binary fission fragments. On the average, the total angular momentum extracted for ternary fission fragments is ∼1.4 ℏ lower than in binary fission. Consequently, results indicate that the mechanism of the ternary α-particles emission may directly effect an induction of angular momenta of fission fragments, and possible scenarios of such mechanisms are discussed. Further, the dependence of the angular momenta of 106Mo and 140Xe on the number of emitted neutrons from correlated pairs of primary fragments was obtained also showing a decreasing dependence of average angular momenta with increasing number of emitted neutrons. Consequences are briefly discussed.

From prompt gamma - gamma - gamma coincidence studies with a 252Cf source, the yrast levels were identified from 2+ to 16+ and 14+ in neutron-rich 162,164Gd, respectively. Transition energies between the same spin states are higher and moments of inertia lower at every level in N = 100 164Gd than in N = 98 162Gd. The same trend is seen in 164,166Dy. These observations are in contrast to the continuous decrease in the 2+ energy to a minimum at neutron midshell (N = 104) in Er, Yb, and Hf nuclei. The lowest known 2+ energy in this region now occurs for N = 96 156Nd and next for N = 98 160Sm, which are well removed from midshell for both protons and neutrons.
... This is the first time this mode is observed in Ce-Zr pairs; it is ∼1.0(3)% of the first mode. The observation of this mode in this pair can be explained when one considers that 143−145 Ba and 146,148 Ce have been determined to be octupole deformed [29,30,[33][34][35] and may also have hyperdeformation at scission to give these nuclei high internal energy and in turn gives rise to high neutron multiplicities. The second curve (6-10 neutrons) in Fig 4 was fitted by restricting the width of the second curve to the width of the first curve (0-7 neutron channels) and the position to 8 neutron channel. ...

... One should mention that the 117 keV peak is slightly contaminated with the 117 keV ground state transition of 143 Ba. However, with regard to figure 3.5 its contribution was not included for correction since the 0n-channel is only weakly populated as can be estimated from the intensity ratios for the barium transitions 117 keV and 343 keV of R (Iγ (117)/Iγ (343) =0.05 as it was measured in spontaneous fission of 252 Cf and 248 Cm [72]. With a centroid shift difference of ∆C = 1695(100) ps, a ∆C Compton = 1104(100) ps, a PRD = -111(10) ps and a peak-to-background ratio P/BG = 0.51(5) the mean lifetime calculates with eq. ...

... The same approach applied to 184 Hg leads to the two-ordersof-magnitude higher value than the experimental result [19]. For 186 Hg the method used to extract the lifetime of the 0 + 2 state [59] suffers from unaccounted systematic effects. As shown in Ref. [60] and discussed in details in Sec. ...

... One problem is the difficulty of realizing an optical cavity since, at high photon energies, reflectors (even grazing angle units) are difficult to realize. One proposed solution involved travelling wave pumping by laser compression (Baldwin and Khokhlov 1975) to achieve 10 5 times the solid state density (Hora 1975(Hora , 1976 at which the subsequent flux density of ~ 10 26 a-particlescm-2 S-1 from H llB reactions could be used for graser excitation (Hora 1974). The present paper discusses a new scheme aimed at achieving highly directed emission of grasers with low beam divergences, and also discusses controlled switching of the graser action. ...

... From experiment, limited stucture information was known compared to other regions due to difficulties to populate the neutron-rich isotopes. Previous experimental studies show energies of the 2 + levels have a local minimum at N = 98 [3,4]. This fact is in contrast with the theoretical calculations for deformation maximum at N = 104 midshell [5]. ...

... We compare our findings with the existing theoretical/experimental constraints. In the left panel of FIG. 1, the yellow region in the upper left corner is excluded by the GR constraint R > 2GM/c 2 and the green one is excluded by causality condition, R > 3GM/c 2[85,86]. Furthermore, we include the bounds on the mass and the radius obtained from the 2019 NICER data. ...

... Accordingly, to some extent, the range of fissioning nuclei for LRA emission studies was constrained in terms of Z and A. The experimental data measured at higher excitation energies (e.g., >12 MeV), however, could be effected by the complex de-excitation process of the compound nucleus such as a multi-chance fission [25,26]. The most comprehensively studied cases of LRA emissions are 238,240,242,244 Pu [17,20], 242,244,246,248 Cm [19,21], 250,252 Cf [19,23,[27][28][29][30] and 256,257 Fm [16]. These data, acquired from both spontaneous and thermalneutron-induced fission, where the excitation energy does not exceed ≈7 MeV, represent the most recent and valuable experimental source for elucidating the empirical features of the LRA emission process. ...
