... The documentation of the southern African spider beetle fauna started with the description of Ptinus scutellaris Boheman (1851) from South Africa. Since then several genera and species have been added from this area, with more recent work including the following: Bellés (1985), revision of the Gibbiinae; Borowski (1995), description of a new species of the endemic Namibian Damarus Peringuey; Irish (1996a), a review of Stethomezium Hinton, Meziomorphum Pic and Lepidomezium Bellés;Irish (1996b), revision of Damarus; Irish (1999), exotic species introductions; Borowski (2000) synonomy of Irish (1996a) species; Philips & Foster (2004) description of a new genus, Cryptopeniculus, from Namaqualand; and Borowski (2006), creation of the new genus Scaleptinus. Despite these papers, numerous species in this region remain undescribed. ...
