A larger social network does not necessarily provide adequate social support, especially for individuals with mental disorders who are likely to surround themselves with similar others struggling with mental illness, which may negatively impact their psychological functioning (Schenk et al. 2021). Moreover, individuals with mental illnesses such as BD tend to have poorer interpersonal functioning than those with no mental disorder, and having more social contacts may increase the frequency of their interpersonal conflicts (Eidelman et al. 2012;Walker et al. 1993).
