It is argued here that social effects like skill level of labour are not singularly determined by the technological level. Instead they are a result of conscious human choices, where factors such as economy, market requirement, and social values are involved. This thesis is illustrated by a fifteen year case study of one production unit within Volvo. The period covered takes the company from the mec ha nistic industrial production concepts associated with massproduction to organic organizational ideals suited the advanced technology of High Tech-society and the values and needs of modern man.
