The study was performed using data from two representative Spanish forest pine stands: a Pinus pinea forest stand at Hoyo de Pinares (Ávila, 40º31′3,9″N, 4º23′52″W, at an elevation of 900 m) and a Pinus nigra forest stand at Sierra de Cazorla (Jaén, 37º48′49''N, 2º57′30''W, at an elevation of 1,800 m). Hoyo de Pinares and Sierra de Cazorla are home to some of the oldest pines dated for the species (Creus 1998;Natalini et al. 2016).
