The authors study the variation of the sensilles and the wing pattern of Culicoides circumscriptus Kieffer, 1918, they consider that Culicoides kirovabadicus Dzhafarov 1964, could be synonymous.

The authors are showing the characteristics of Fannia larvae ventral and dorsal sides. They specify on figures the morphological characters that permit to distinguish the species scalaris, manicata and canicularis.

... Previous studies based on mitochondrial markers indicated several populations of C. circumscriptus (14, 15). Natural populations of C. circumscriptus show morphological variability in antennal sensilla coeloconia (16) and wing patterns (17). Culicoides circumscriptus shows plasticity in the type of habitat occupied for larval development, and can include sand dunes, sewage channels (sites poor in oxygen), damp sites (without surface water), salt marshes, shady areas and most livestock farming areas (18)(19)(20)(21). ...

... All Hypodermatinae and Oestrinae have porous spiracular plates with no indication of slits; they have accordingly been coded as inapplicable. Dermatobia hominis show spiracular slits that are close to vertical (Kremer et al., 1978: Figs 1, 2) but still oblique, especially the two lateralmost slits, and different from the almost perfectly vertical condition in Cobboldia (Zumpt, 1965: Figs 169, 176). Sarcophaga has species showing an almost vertical orientation as well as species with a more typical (even if steep) oblique orientation (®gures in, e.g., Ferrar, 1987) and the taxon has been coded for both states (1 and 2). ...

... Culicoides clastrieri is very similar to C. festivipennis, but they can be distinguished by the presence of sensillae coeloconia (present on antennal segments 3, 11-15 for C. clastrieri and 3-15 for C. festivipennis (Mathieu et al., 2012)) on antenna segments and by the color and pattern differences present in their thoraxes (Fig. 2) (Sarvašová et al., 2014) and by the elongated pale spot in the m cell of the wing (Mathieu et al., 2012). However, some differences were found in biology of these two species, noting that C. clastrieri prefers habitats for breeding with higher organic matter when compared with C. festivipennis (Kremer et al., 1978). We found six specimens of this species in the Lithuanian Zoo in an enclosure where ducks (Anatidae) are kept and near the enclosure with wolves, in an open area and close of a small river. ...

... The pupal stages, however, seem not be suitable for species identification by MALDI-TOF MS as their profiles rapidly change during metamorphosis as shown in Fig. 5 for early (1 day) and late (3 days old) specimens. Thus, the identification of pupae preferably is done by genetic or morphological analyses or by analysing adults which emerged in the lab (Rieb and Kremer, 1981;Uslu and Dik, 2007), e.g. by MALDI-TOF MS. ...

... Some Culicoides species rely on insect haemolymph as a protein source (Lassen et al., 2012). Further, there is a record of C. anophelis and C. nubeculosus feeding on engorged mosquitoes (Kremer et al., 1974;Ma et al., 2013). Like other insects, Culicoides harbour insectspecific viruses of the genera Iflavirus (Langat et al., 2021). ...

... The tree was rooted using the sequence of Culicoides nubeculosus (KJ624102) as an outgroup (Augot et al., 2017). (Kremer et al., 1975). Only sequences of C. sp # 20, sister species of C. trifasciellus (Bakhoum et al., 2017), are published and incorporated in our study (MF399739-MF399744). ...

... Since then, the disease has become enzootic, with several outbreaks reported annually throughout the country involving various serotypes [5][6][7][8][9]. Previous entomological investigations in Morocco have identified 56 Culicoides species, including at least eight species that are the principal or potential vectors of animal viruses [10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. ...

En el primero de ellos, Callot et al. (1975) añaden 3 especies, encontradas en un estudio previo en 1970 en la provincia valenciana de Alicante: ...
