Virgil Madgearu Review of Economic Studies and Research

Iulia Ivașcenco

This paper delves into the concept of antifragile leadership and organizational development within developing countries, employing a robust conceptual framework and case studies. It explores how entities thrive under conditions of uncertainty and stress by becoming antifragile, which is particularly pertinent in volatile environments found in developing nations. Through theoretical insights and analyses of real-world applications in organizations like Grameen Bank, BRAC, and M-PESA, the paper illustrates how these principles are not merely theoretical but have practical, impactful applications. These organizations leverage local adversities as catalysts for innovation and growth, showcasing the potential of antifragile strategies to foster resilience and progressive development. The study highlights the need for further empirical research to expand the understanding of antifragility across different sectors and regions, suggesting a significant potential for antifragile principles to enhance the strategic agility of organizations facing diverse challenges in developing countries.

This paper explores the concept of antifragility, as proposed by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, in the context of business management within the Republic of Moldova. The study delves into the potential benefits of businesses adopting an antifragile approach in an environment characterized by substantial economic and political volatility. It employs a qualitative research method to examine Moldova's economic, political, and social climate, highlighting the potential for businesses to thrive amidst disorder. The paper investigates the principles of antifragility and their application to businesses, contrasting them with the traditional notions of robustness and resilience. It further identifies specific strategies that could enable businesses in Moldova to adopt an antifragile approach, such as diversification, innovation, agility, and network-building. The study also presents real-world examples of Moldovan businesses that have successfully leveraged disorder for growth. It compares them with businesses that have failed to cope with volatility, emphasizing the differences in their strategic approaches. Moreover, it discusses potential challenges and limitations associated with implementing antifragile strategies in the Moldovan context, exploring how businesses might need to balance antifragility with other business objectives. The paper concludes by outlining areas for future research on antifragility in businesses, particularly within Moldova. The findings of this study emphasize the potential benefits of developing antifragile businesses in Moldova and contribute to the growing body of literature on antifragility in business management.

Alongside many studies on adoption efforts for antifragility practices in business, there is a research gap related to using Stoic principles. This study identifies five approaches derived from Stoic philosophy and examines them in the context of business antifragility. The dichotomy of control, the discipline of thought, responsibility for the future, calm in the face of chaos, and fear as a tool for growth are analyzed based on previous research and examples of entrepreneurial practice. The antifragility concept gained growing attention in research and practice with the pandemic, the economic situation related to the Ukrainian conflict, and the growing influence of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, and big data analytics. However, the literature lacks studies on Stoic approaches to antifragility. We extend knowledge of the emerging antifragility field by mixing it with the ideas of the Stoic philosophy.

Antifragility is the ability of organizations to face difficulties and improve their strategic position. Manufacturers, as opposed to service companies, are burdened by high fixed costs, impeding in developing antifragility. The purpose of the article is to analyze the factors that enhance antifragility in a cosmetics company. The article is exploratory in nature. The case of a cosmetics company that improved its business model and strengthened its competitive position during COVID-19 pandemic was analyzed. The author found that antifragility is a mix of operational agility, context intelligence and entrepreneurial attitude. The main resources and capabilities supporting the development of antifragility in the cosmetics company are slack financial resources and a large and varied network of partners for innovation and research. The creativity, velocity and operational agility were the main capabilities found. This article offers directions for entrepreneurs in the cosmetics industry to be prepared for adversity and turn it, as much as possible, into opportunities. The concepts of resilience and agility have been broadly studied, however there is a lack of research on antifragility. This is the first case study to explore factors enhancing antifragility in the cosmetics industry in Eastern Europe.

... These strategies include measures to restore normal operations (Asortse & Denga, 2023). Besides, other ways can help a company have a higher level of redundancy; this includes: maintaining safety stock levels, using more than one mode of transportation, as well as working with backup suppliers (Ivașcenco, 2023). However, the literature lacks content on how financial constraints caused by disruptive events affect resilient supply chains and how the financial constraints can be alleviated. ...
