Based on an integrated perspective of political representation, this chapter identifies the main gender differences in MPs’ traits and seniority in politics and investigates whether the feminization of parliaments impacts on how representation is exercised. We find that female and male MPs have a similar preparation, which debunks the meritocracy argument against gender quotas. Yet, it is tougher for women to strike a work-life balance, as can be seen in dominant family models across MPs. Results also indicate that the legislative agenda has been engendered, with more attention being paid to social issues. Concerning representational styles, female MPs are found to connect more often than male MPs to civil society organizations but they are not considered to make parliamentary practices more consensual and less aggressive.

Literature has repeatedly shown that gender mainstreaming is far from being transformative and smoothly introduced. It is rather a contested strategy, leading to steady impacts on changing routines and gendering policy outcomes. However, research policies have appeared to be one of the issues areas where a gender perspective has been introduced. This is the case for Spanish research policies, which have been assessed to promote the inclusion of women in the R&D system. This article explores these emerging shifts in order to explore the problem for women in science and the solutions proposed to solve it. In addition, it seeks to examine whether these measures can potentially help women to get an equal position in science or whether they are addressing the wrong targets. To do so, this work draws on a survey of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers carried out in Spain, covering 350 respondents. It captures the necessities, wills and obstacles for women scientists, and while doing that, it allows us to assess whether gender mainstreaming is likely to be effective for bringing more women to the academia.

El objetivo general de este artículoes analizar las reformas y transformaciones recientes de las políticas públicas de igualdad de género en Galicia a la luz del contexto de crisis económico-financiera actual y el cambio de color político que se ha producido en los últimos años. Para lograr este objetivo general se intentan contestar las siguientes preguntas. ¿qué tipo de actuaciones en materia de igualdad se han llevado a cabo desde los gobiernos de la Xunta de Galicia? ¿Suponen el desarrollo de las políticas recientes algún cambio con respecto al grado de desarrollo de estas políticas antes del 2010? ¿Ha influido el color político en los cambios y la evolución de las políticas de género en Galicia?, ¿Es una cuestión de recursos? Finalmente,¿se encuentra el mainstreaming institucionalizado?

Este articulo tiene como objetivo abordar desde una doble perspectiva, normativa y politologica, algunos de los principales argumentos y orientaciones acerca de la presencia de las mujeres en el ambito de la politica que permitan establecer las claves para un posible marco de analisis. Es una reflexion que busca fijar un punto de encuentro entre la dimension normativa y las investigaciones de caracter empirico, con el fin de evitar la compartimentacion excesiva en el terreno de la teoria de genero y enriquecer las conclusiones
