Tragicomedy is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary, as 'a play (or, rarely, a story) combining the qualities of tragedy and a comedy, or containing both tragic and comic elements' 3) As a tribute to the literary creativity of Gogol and Akutagawa, I present a comparison of their stories, tinged with patient suffering and medical humor. Though, Gogol's story had attracted the attention of psychoanalysts and literati [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] , as of now, Akutagawa's story had failed to receive equal attention 15,16) . In the mid-1960s Ivanov was commissioned to write an entry on poetics for Kratkaja literaturnaja entsiklopedija [Concise literary encyclopedia], which was positively peer-reviewed by Juri Lotman, who called it "a brief but exceptionally informative presentation of the main problems and branches of poetics" (quoted in Pilshchikov, Trunin 2016: 702; see also Pilshchikov, Lotman 2016). According to Ivanov, poetics is "a study of the structure of literary texts and the system of aesthetic means they use" (Ivanov 1968b: 936). ...

Most of the oral and written communication happened in Russian, but as Lotman himself learned Estonian and wrote and published Estonian articles on semiotics, he contributed to the Estonian culture as well as the Russian. This situation generated a transnational perspective (Pilshchikov and Trunin 2016). And it seems to have been easier to get some texts published in Estonian than in Russian. ...
