... From an etic perspective, we identify four ways in which some families and their caregivers construct family together, thus positioning the caregiver as a family member. Research has shown that individuals related by blood or law construct family by building a shared history and future (Noble et al., 1994); by embedding members within a network of family relations (Weiner, 1997); by participating in leisure activities, special events and fun (Daly, 2001); and through the sharing of love and care (Schneider, 1980).
