... Modern net fishing is the primary mortality cause that threatens small odontocetes including the vaquita (Morell, 2019). This illegal gillnet fishing in the Gulf of California has brought the vaquita to the brink of extinction and despite efforts to reduce gillnet fishing within the vaquitas' range, the lack of enforcement over time has led to the resurgence of illegal gillnet fishing, which has posed high risk of extinction (Nicholls, 2017). Studies have been done to estimate the mortality rate of vaquitas from various gillnet configurations, unfortunately, they are captured and killed in almost every type of gillnet examined (D'Agrosa et al., 2000;Rojas-Bracho and Reeves, 2013). ...
