This book is part of a collection of five works on memories from the Alexander L. Kielland oil platform disaster in 1980. The book includes memories of those who were in some way involved in the rescue operation without being among the survivors of the accident. When we phrase ourselves in this way, it is an acknowledgment of the survivors themselves playing a crucial role in the rescue. Many of those who survived the accident did so thanks to the efforts of others who were part of the accident. Some of those helpers survived and others died. The memories of the survivors are included in another publication in the series of memories after the accident. The rescue operation after the accident involved all North Sea nations. The focus of this collection is on memories from Norway. However, we wish to acknowledge the importance of rescue workers from other nations as well and hope that we will also be able to include their memories in future editions. The memories are from interviews conducted by the listed authors with those involved in the rescue operation. The interviewees have all read the interview transcripts, have sometimes altered them and made additions, and in a few cases have rewritten them to such an extent that they themselves are listed as authors. An included list of references is a selection of archival sources as well as published sources related to the memories in this collection. More substantial bibliographies, as well as lists of archival sources, are included in Smith-Solbakken (2016) and in Smith-Solbakken and Weihe (2019). Further specialized publications focus on subjects such as post-traumatic stress disorders (Smith-Solbakken and Weihe, 2018) and grief (Weihe and Smith-Solbakken, 2012), and include additional bibliographies. First edition was published 27th of May 2019. Last update: 9th of March 2023. (Minor correction 5th of February 2024) English edition added 14th of December 2023. Published as a separate volume 12th of June 2024.

Journal of Critical Realism

In March 1980, the oil-platform Alexander L. Kielland capsized in the North Sea resulting in the death of 123 workers. The Norwegian inquiry into the disaster was closed to the public and the survivors' accounts of the disaster differed considerably from the official account. The inquiry was experienced as undemocratic by those who had been in the disaster. Many of them felt humiliated, claiming that their opinions were not given due weight. We argue that if the inquiry had been more transparent and inclusive, important information would have been made available that might have prevented subsequent disasters. Such transparency would be supported if disaster commissions used a critical realist version of knowledge acquisition based on a layered ontology and grounded in an epistemology that uses retroduction and judgemental rationality. In this article, critical realism is also used to justify the interdisciplinary nature of the research, which starts with historical methods.

Gaming and gambling disorders are behaviours which engage young and older persons and affect both women and men. The aim of this paper was to describe gaming and gambling disorders among the el derly and discuss the dimensions of digital, traditional and alternative life on the internet. The social impact and consequences of gaming and gambling disorders, and the arising new challenges for so cial work, were identified. The current review sought to conduct an overview of literature relating to gaming and gambling disorders connected to the elderly, defined as persons aged 60+. The findings are based on critical review of descriptive and policy literature on gaming and gambling disorders, and of the relevant research. Additionally, the findings support the implementation of public health policies to prevent problem gambling among the elderly. The contribution of this research is that it provides an overview of a broad and intercultural re source for the development of public health policy and improvement of the training of social workers. Social work needs to develop a strategy to educate professional support workers in the agency on the role of the social workers' scope of practice. Further research focusing on the education of social workers working with elderly, and the devel opment of tools for identifying the motivation and treating the gaming and gambling problem, is rec ommended.

Arbeiderhistorie

This book is volume 4 in a collection of five works on memories from the Alexander L. Kielland oil platform disaster in 1980. The book includes memories of those who worked in the oil-industry and who were in some way colleagues and/or employers or in management positions. The memories in this volume are from either from interviews or memories written down by those who worked in the oil-industry and who were in some way colleagues and/or employers or in management positions. The interviewees have all read the interview transcripts, have sometimes altered them and made additions, and in a few cases have rewritten them to such an extent or themselves submitted their memories. In such cases, they themselves listed as authors. Other interview notes listed with the interviewer as author. As interviews only are with Norwegians, we do hope to supplement this collection with additional memories from people in other countries. Many oil-workers worked across national boundaries and we know there are many colleagues as well as people in management positions in other countries. The administration as well as workers in the oil industry activity in the North Sea involved not only national of the North Sea countries, but also nationals of other countries such as USA. The included list of references is a selection of archival sources as well as published sources related to the memories in this collection. Last update: 16th of February 2023.
