Comparatively, a large number of phocid pinnipeds may use the trachea for sound production (Boness and James 1979;Bryden and Felts 1974;Burns 1981;Gailey-Phipps 1984;Miller and Job 1992;Piérard 1969;Ray 1981;Terhune et al. 1994;Tyack and Miller 2002). The re-use of tracheal structures for phonation might be a by-product of functional adaptations of the respiratory tract to diving (Bryden and Felts 1974;Kooyman and Andersen 1969;Kooyman 1981;Ray 1981;Tyack and Miller 2002).
