El filósofo e historiador Wilhelm Dilthey (1833-1911) es el representante más destacado del historicismo alemán. Su obra comprende estudios sobre el problema del conocimiento histórico y la investigación científica, obras historiográficas y ensayos. El problema central de su pensamiento filosófico es la elaboración de una crítica de la razón histórica, destinada a establecer las posibilidades, los límites y los modos del conocimiento del mundo espiritual, en analogía con la fundamentación kantiana de la ciencia de la naturaleza.
