The effect of peroxide content and filler type on the tensile properties, hardness, crosslinking density and compression set properties of ethylene-propylene-diene-terpolymer rubber (EPDM) vulcanizates was investigated. The reults show that the crosslinking density increases with the increasing peroxide content in unfilled EPDM vulcanizates. The increasing peroxide content in unfilled EPDM vulcanizates shows lower tensile strength, elongation at break and compression set, but higher hardness. EPDM vulcanizates filled with reinforcing filler have higher tensile strength, hardness and crosslinking density than that of unfilled EPDM vulcanizates due to the physical junctions between rubber and filler. Besides, the crosslinking density of carbon black filled sample is higher than that of silica filled sample. Carbon black N550 filled EPDM vulcanizates have lower compression set than silica filled EPDM vulcanizates and hydrophobic fumed silica filled EPDM vulcanizates have lower compression set than the common fumed silica filled EPDM vulcanizates. © 2016, Chengdu University of Science and Technology. ... As a result, more branched chains ( Figure 11) were generated in the elastomer, yielding the increased cross-linking density of the polyurethane elastomer and enhancing its tensile and tearing strength, which is consistent with the experimental results of Yang et al. [29], EHTPB-modified epoxy resin exhibited excellent mechanical properties than that of neat epoxy resin. Moreover, the increase of the cross-linking density may block the sliding and movement of the molecular segments, resulting in a lower fracture growth rate, which is consistent with results from a study by Shen et al. [30]. Compared with the HTPB-IPDI binder system, the EHTPB-IPDI binder system had lower Ea and better thermal stability and mechanical properties. ...
