The Optical Network Unit (ONU), a vital part of a fiber-optic subscriber network system, will need to be reduced in size, power needs and cost in order to realize the goal of Fiber To The Home (FTTH) in the near term. This article takes a detailed look at the design technologies for three key components - the power converter, ring tone generator, and surge-protection devices - and their modular design. It then describes a methodology used to evaluate a prototype ONU and presents evaluation results for these key technologies.

To achieve Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) in the near future, the main issues for the current optical network unit (ONU) are down-sizing, reducing power and reduction cost. For these purposes, we considered effective technologies for component and module design. In this paper, we discuss detailed design technologies for modules and three key components, the power converter, ring tone generator and lightning surge devices. This paper also describes a method of evaluating a prototype ONU and presents evaluation results of these key technologies.
