In a small sample of emerging adults (n = 41), emerging adults' levels of felt obligation toward parents were not associated with psychological symptoms, well-being, and loneliness (Abraham & Stein, 2010). However, in a sample of 502 adolescents, McAuliffe (2010) found that higher levels of some aspects of felt obligation toward mothers were associated with higher levels of psychological adjustment. Collectively, these findings suggest emerging adult-parent relationships that are characterized by higher levels of affection, reciprocity, and felt obligation may be associated with better psychological adjustment among emerging adults. ...
