Studying electric-vehicle public-charging choices is an important aspect of accelerating electric-vehicle adoption. Understanding which factors would entice existing and potential users to charge their electric vehicles at public locations would provide important evidence for policy-makers, vehicle manufacturers and charging providers. The academic and grey literature has now matured to a point where a critical synthesis of the current state of knowledge is necessary. To fulfil this, this review provides a synthesis and critical discussion of the most up-to-date evidence on public charging choices based on which a conceptual framework to match choices and their determinants is devised. Research gaps and further empirical evidence required in this area, as these emerged from this review, include better understanding of the temporal patterns of public charging, users' preferences for different types of charging locations, payment models (monthly subscription, pay as you go) and payment methods.

Freight traffic fulfils not only the business needs of a region to move goods between producers, manufacturers, and end consumers , but also creates a host of unintended environmental, social, and economic impacts. Despite its importance, freight traffic impacts and associated logistic inefficiencies are largely overlooked in the urban transport discussions in developing economies like India. This paper addresses this research gap by outlining the research progress related to freight transport in India and discusses the key problems related to freight system performance. The published literature in the last three decades (1990-2020), policy briefs and institutional reports are explored to summarize key findings and uncover thematic linkages. We categorize the inefficiencies in the freight system into four aspects: (i) long-haul trucking, (ii) last-mile logistics, (iii) freight distribution (inventory level), and (iv) policies and regulations. Apart from identifying the limitations in policy discourse, this paper also explores the possible solution concepts to improve efficiency in freight transport and mitigate the unintended negative externalities in urban areas. The overall conclusion is that increasing and improving infrastructure and equipment, technology and operations, and policy and regulations will go some way towards making freight more efficient in India and reducing congestion and emissions of air pollutants and GHG. The present paper can be expected to promote further freight research and effective policy instrument design in India.


Can we save GHG emissions by working from home?

Using data from official government publications in the UK, we estimate the potential changes in transport and buildings CO 2 e emissions in England and Wales if those engaged in jobs compatible with homeworking were to work mainly from home. We find that the net result is likely to be an increase, rather than a decrease in CO 2 e emissions. Assuming that 20% to 30% of workers were to work from home, the increase would range from 0.18% to 0.97% relative to emissions from the buildings and transport sectors combined, and from 0.11% to 0.60% relative to emissions from all sources. Under the very unrealistic assumptions that the buildings where the new teleworkers used to work close permanently rather than remain open or be repurposed, and there is no rebound travel, there are modest emissions savings, which range from 0.61% to 1.63% of CO 2 e emissions from the transport and building sectors combined, and from 0.38% to 1.01% of CO 2 e emissions from all sources when 20% to 30% of workers work from home.
