... As Hill's Bar was outside Whannell's jurisdiction, the Justice of the Peace at Hill's Bar, George Perrier, endorsed the warrant and gave it to his constable, Henry Hickson, to execute. After the miners were arrested at Hill's Bar, Perrier issued a summons to have Dixon brought to Hill's Bar to testify against his attackers, but when Hickson delivered Perrier's summons to Whannell, Whannell not only refused to turn Dixon over but told Hickson to bring Burns and Farrell back to Yale for prosecution (Akrigg & Akrigg, 1977;Hill, 1987;McKelvie, n.d.). Hickson refused and Whannell, in a "burst of fury," arrested him for contempt of court (Akrigg & Akrigg, 1977, p. 147). ...
