Evaluated data for the four properties, density, surface tension, viscosity, and electrical conductance are reported for salt systems in which the anionic and cationic species may differ. This contrasts with the systems in the preceding publications in this series in which the anionic species were, in general, the same in the binary mixtures. The results are reported in equation form, with brief tables of numerical values. A cross index by salt system was compiled and is included for ease of accessing the data tables.

The melting and premelting thermal behavior has been investigated for a series of polysulfide compositions from ∼45 to ∼82 wt % sulfur by using the techniques of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermicity for the formation of the polysulfides from K2S and K2S3 has been characterized by an in situ calorimetric technique. Enthalpy of fusion and heat capacity data are reported for the following compositions: di-, tri-, tetra-, penta-, and hexasulfides. Pronounced glass-forming tendencies on cooling from the molten state are observed in the region of ∼62-∼67 wt % sulfur; this composition range ls also characterized by Inverse crystallization phenomena, much as observed in the closely related Na2S-sulfur system. The calorimetric studies were extended to two compositions of still higher sulfur content, i.e., ∼74 and ∼82 wt % sulfur, and behavioral aspects are examined in the light of the preceding results.

The present communication reports the results of some melting-crystallization studies, undertaken to characterize the thermal behaviour of the sulphur electrolyte. Heat capacities, enthalpies of transition (solid-state) and of fusion have been measured. The electrolyte is observed to have glass forming tendencies and the composition range for this behaviour is characterized. An inverse-crystallization phenomenon is observed as the sulphur content increases. The saturation solubility of sulphur is the sodium pentasulphide layer in the liquid-liquid immiscibility composition range of the sulphur electrolyte, the influence of moisture as an additive in trace amounts, and the thermal character of the chemical events in the formation of polysulphides from sulphur and Na2S as reactants are also reported.

DATA FOR ENTHALPIES FOR THE SOLID-STATE TRANSITION AND FOR MELTING, AND THE HEAT CAPACITIES, GAINED BY THE METHOD OF DSC CALORIMETRY, ARE REPORTED FOR THE EQUIMOLAR COMPOSITION OFNANO//3-KNO//3 (DRAWSALT). THE MEASUREMENTS OF THE MELTING-CRYSTALLIZATION PROPERTIES WERE EXTENDED TO SPAN THE COMPLETE COMPOSITION RANGE OF THIS BINARY SYSTEM, AND THE RESULTS ARE CORRELATED WITH THE SOLIDUS-LIQUIDUS LINES OF THE PHASE DIAGRAM FOR THIS SYSTEM. A LIMITED SERIES OF MEASUREMENTS WASALSO UNDERTAKEN ON THE INFLUENCE OF PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO AMBIENT AIR ATMOSPHERE OF THE DRAWSALT WHILE IN THE MOLTEN STATE (AT ″APPROXIMATELY EQUALS″ 600 D. C), AND THESE RESULTS ARE ALSO REPORTED.
... The phase equilibria between gas, solid and liquid, and the thermodynamic properties of the liquid phase in the Na-S system have been widely investigated [60,[63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74]. The K-S system is not as widely studied [64,[75][76][77][78][79][80], and no gas phase/condensed phase equilibrium has been reported. The phase relations and the thermodynamic properties of the Na-K system have been reported in references [81][82][83][84][85][86]. ...

... Yet, compared to the vast amount of possible mixture combinations, data on the thermal conductivity of binary and higher-order MS mixtures are relatively limited in the literature. Much of the existing empirical data also exhibits ( ) > 0 [26,25,50,110,6,52,9,128,95]. As a result, the empirical data of only a few mixtures have been compared to theoretical models and MD predictions [26,55,110,83,118,64,50,8,128,25,130,124,6,119,85,52,5,9,30,34,35,29,68,95,101,68,128]. ...

... A few years after the discovery by Raman and Krishnan of the new "Raman" effect, one of the first molten salt studies appeared in a new journal addressed to a new, at that time, field [1]. The mercury lamp (Toronto ark) as excitation source and the photographic plate detection system made the use of Raman spectroscopy rather difficult for melt studies; thus up to the early 1960s very limited work on melts was published [2][3][4][5]. One of these early authors, T. F. Young [2], was also the first to introduce in the early 1950s the photomultiplier tube (PMT) in the Raman detection system. ...

... Further, another possibility was that the value of surface tension taken from the literature was not accurate. As measuring methods of the surface tension of molten salt, the maximum bubble pressure method, capillary rise method and rig method were developed (Janz et al., 1969). However, all of them have some technical imprecision. ...

... Majority of the studies conducted to produce Si using SiO 2 as a raw material used CaCl 2 -based electrolytes. CaCl 2 melts have advantages such as high solubility in water (Garrett, 2004), low corrosivity (Janz and Tomkins, 1979) and high oxygen ions solubility (Wenz et al., 1969). Moreover, CaCl 2 is non-toxic, inexpensive and widely available. ...

... The equilibrium potentials for many rare Earth metal fission products are more cathodic than those of actinide ions, therefore a balance must be maintained in choosing cathodic applied potentials while preserving of the desired actinide product composition. 38,39 Figure 5. ... These spectra demonstrate the formation of nitrite on discharge and its oxidation on charge. Broadening of the nitrate eutectic Raman bands at 720 and 740 cm -1 during cycling is thought to originate from melt structural changes as nitrite ions are introduced 15,16 . Raman analysis of the discharged Ni electrode surface did not allow us to detect Li 2 O, most probably due to the excess molten nitrate electrolyte currently used in these cells (150 μl cm -2 ). ...

... The micro-Raman spectra of C-S-H and C-S-Ag-H exhibit certain nonrelevant dissimilarities mainly due to the intensity of the calcite signals, at 1084, 712, 280 and 154 cm − 1 , that arise from natural atmospheric carbonation [47,50] (Fig. 3). Additionally, the bands that appear at 1049 and 1067 cm − 1 are linked to the symmetric N -O stretching modes of the reagents (Ca(NO 3 ) 2 ⋅4H 2 O and additionally AgNO 3 in the sample with silver) [51,52]. In any case, the characteristic band of C-S-H at 669 cm − 1 corresponding to the symmetrical bending of Si-O-Si [50], is equally featured in both spectra regardless of the presence of silver. ...

... The measured c p data of the NaF-BeF 2 -UF 4 -ZrF 4 were comparable to their c DP p and c IM p within the range of measurement temperatures. c p of the fuel salt increased with temperature, which is similar to c p of FLiNaK and other fluoride mixtures reported by Rogers et al. [47] and Khokhlov et al. [48]. However, c IM p of the fuel salt decreases with temperature, since the c p of NaF in a liquid state decreases with temperature. ...
