The ostinato chord in the strings has a split third which simultaneously suggests A Major and A Minor; in contrast, the first measure of the theme emphasizes the tonic and dominant pitches in Db Major, thereby setting up a polytonal clash. In the second measure of the theme, an almost complete descent through the octatonic scale -associated since the nineteenth century with evil (Taruskin 1985, 93) and a common device for suspense in film music (Lehman 2014) -subverts the initial sense of Db in the melody. These harmonic deformations are thrown into relief by the regular rhythm, the symmetrical 2+2 phrasing, and the predominantly scalar motion, all of which evoke the prototype of a conventional tonal march: a stylistic reference point that jars with the dissonance of the pitch material. ...
