In short, as summarised in Smirnova and Sommerer (2020), in CxG literature there are two competing approaches to the nature of horizontal links: they are based on shared semantics as in the "allostruction approach" (Cappelle 2006;Perek 2015), where "two formally divergent constructions are related horizontally, i.e., they represent allostructions of one construction, if they are synonymous" (Smirnova & Sommerer 2020: 27), or they are based on semantic or functional contrast of related variants as in the "paradigmatic approach" (Van de Velde 2014). As the current study of the variation between V-initial and þa-VS clauses shows, it is worthwhile to look at linguistic data from both perspectives and not necessarily treat these two approaches as mutually exclusive. ...
