Abstract: This work aims to frame part of Poe's fiction as the first deliberate achievement in the structuring of literary horror. Even considering the influence exerted by gothic works over the au-thor's formation, it is impossible to ignore the pioneer trait of his tales when combining, in apparent paradox, the scientific perspective to the fantastic narrative of macabre tenor. The analysis will fo-cus on two tales, "The Black Cat" and "The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar", and will attempt to show how some of their features, such as the unity of effect, the descriptive economy and the psy-chological dimension, have become indelible components of horror's axiomatic system.
