Lister embraced a shift in thinking that there "… was something in the air, not the air itself, which caused fermentation and putrefaction…". 5 In 1907 Franklin Clark published a brief history of antiseptic surgery, noting during Lister's time: "the air contained morbific elements, capable of inducing inflammation and suppuration, a problem which as yet had not been solved 5 ".
