Nine of the ten clinical scales of the MMPI were considered as measures of the neuroticism, psychoticism and extraversion personality dimensions of Eysenck. The correspondence between the conceptual placement of the subtests in Eysenck's three-dimensional space and their empirical placement in factor space was tested for 205 married males and again for 205 married females. The correspondence was significant for both sexes but considerably stronger for the females than for the males.

Journal of Applied Social Psychology

The need for indirect assessment techniques for the measurement of social attitudes is discussed, and the disappointing results of many current methodologies reviewed. Contrastive Vignette Technique (CVT), an indirect-structured methodology designed to overcome many of the shortcomings inherent in Current techniques, is presented. Three construct validation procedures were carried out in attempting to provide evidence for the value of the CVT approach in the assessment of group attitudes: Prediction of convergent and divergent response patterns based on group membership, comparison against concurrent direct measurement of the same conceptual content area, and comparison of response patterns across and within vignettes. Overall results provided support for the validity of the present approach. Of 16 directional response-pattern predictions made in the first experiment, 15 were confirmed, and the remaining prediction was in the expected direction. In the second procedure, expectations of differential response patterns were more clearly observed in CVT performance than in responses on direct scales designed to address the same content. Results of the final experiment suggested that CVT performance was consistent and transsituational, but that the effect of the evaluative context was stronger than expected. Extension and application of CVT is discussed.

Compared two primary induction methods that have cognitive bases, Autobiographical Recollections and Structural Set of Mood Statements, by assessing their effectiveness in inducing depression and elation moods, respectively. Eighty-three male and 123 female undergraduate college students were assigned randomly to 1 of 15 groups. Each person who participated in the experiment received a depression-related induction or a control followed by an elation-related induction or a control. The effects of each induction were measured by three independent variables: Two depression measured and one anxiety measure. Results generally confirmed hypotheses made by the E that Autobiographical Recollections was the superior method for inducing and altering depression and anxiety in a population that included both sexes.

The construct validity for potential high school dropouts of Holland's theory of vocational choice as measured by the Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI) was studied. The hexagonal arrangement proposed by Holland of the constructs in factor space for potential high school dropouts was supported using the model-testing procedure of Wakefield and Doughtie (Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1973, 20, 513–518). The correspondence of the constructs measured by the VPI for potential high school dropouts and college students was found to be substantially the same using the factor-relating procedure of Kaiser, Hunka, and Bianchini (In H. J. Eysenck & S. B. G. Eysenck (Eds.), Personality structure and measurement. San Diego, Calif.: Knapp, 1969, pp. 333–343). These results indicate that Holland's theory is appropriate for potential high school dropouts and, by implication, for other high school students.

The relationship was studied between the set of constructs specified by Holland's 1973 theory (viz, Realistic, Intellectual, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional) measured by an Adjective List (AL) derived from Holland's theory and the same set of constructs as measured by the Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI). The correspondence of the two measures of Holland's model compared the distances between the constructs as measured by the AL and the constructs measured by the VPI in factor space using an adaptation of a model testing procedure reported by Wakefield and Doughtie 1973. The subjects were 174 undergraduates at a state university. The correspondence between the two separate measures of Holland's model was significant (p < .01). These results provide further support of the construct validity of Holland's theory and offer evidence that the relationships hypothesized by the theory are not tied to any one particular method of measurement.

The Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI) was administered to black and white undergraduates. The overall VPI profiles of the two groups were significantly different. Seven of the 11 scales of the VPI yielded significant differences between the black students and the white students. The black students scored higher on the Social, Conventional, Enterprising, Self-Control, Status, and Infrequency scales. The white students scored higher on the Masculinity scale.

The constructs in Holland's theory (viz., Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional) were compared for male and female college students using a procedure developed by Kaiser et al. (1969). This procedure was employed with constructs measured by the Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI), and with constructs measured by an adjective checklist (ACL) derived from Holland's theory. The correspondence between the VPI for male and female college students was high with a mean cosine of .87. The correspondence between the variables as measured by the ACL for male and female students was also high with a mean cosine of .86 for the six basic constructs. These results indicate that the VPI and the ACL scales derived from Holland's theory measure largely the same constructs for male and female college students.

Scored 100 adults' MMPI protocols for (a) items appearing only on 1 scale (nonoverlapping) and (b) items appearing on more than 1 scale (overlapping). The correspondence of these 2 sets of scales to a theoretical structure composed of neuroticism, psychoticism, and extraversion dimensions was considered using a method presented by J. A. Wakefield and E. B. Doughtie (see record 1974-08049-001). The correspondence of the scales composed of nonoverlapping items with the theoretical structure was insignificant. The correspondence of the scales composed of overlapping items conformed extremely closely to the theoretical structure. Results indicate that neuroticism, psychoticism, and extraversion factors found in the MMPI are due to items that appear on more than 1 scale. It is argued that the factors attributable to the overlapping items validly represent the similarity of the criteria against which the scales were validated. Psychology in The Schools

The authors investigated whether the constructs measured by the Kindergarten Screening Inventory (KSI) were the same for males and females and for Anglo American, Negro American and Mexican American ethnic groups. The factor relating procedure proposed by Kaiser, et al., (1969) to determine the extent to which the same constructs were measured with different groups was used. The correspondence between the constructs measured by the KSI for males and females and for the Anglo American and Negro American and Mexican American ethnic groups was found to be very similar, with mean cosines ranging from.85 to.95. These findings were interpreted as an indication that substantially the same constructs were being measured by the KSI for both sexes and all ethnic groups.

... Numerous studies have found support for the construct validity of Holland's structural hypothesis on samples drawn in the United States (e.g., Bobele et al., 1976;Gati, 1984Gati, , 1991Holland, 1987;Rounds, Davison, & Dawis, 1979;Tuck & Keeling, 1980;Tracey & Rounds, 1992), but the cultural universality of Holland's model remains an open question. Indeed, in a structural metaanalysis of RIASEC data, Rounds and Tracey (in press) found little support for Holland's circumplex across 96 RIASEC matrices from a culturally diverse set of samples drawn from 19 nations. ...

Goldfried and D'Zurilla (1973) was the further established that prediction-criterion validity of the SSHA and indicated that when it was used to predict grades, the highest validity coefficients were obtained. Wakefield, Alston, Yom, and Doughtie (1974) correlated the SSHA and Vocational Preference Inventory and they found that certain dimensions run from academic to non-academic orientations establishing its concurrent validity. Hurlburt, Kroeker, and Gade (1991) were able to establish the discriminant validity of the SSHA factors across gender and year levels (junior vs. senior high school). ...

... When used to test hypothesized order relations within a proximity matrix P, the Wakefield-Doughtie ( 1 973) strategy will undoubtedly be flawed because of the equally likely requirement for the predicted pattern of successes and failures. Thus, because this equally likely requirement is the basis for the inference strategy, all applications of the Wakefield-Doughtie method are suspect even when applied in contexts other than evaluating the Holland model; for example, see the applications to the Illinois Test of Psycholmguistic Ability discussed by Doughtie, Wakefield, Sampson, and Alston (1974). ...

First, considerably more work will need to be done to explore the gender, racial, ethnic, and cultural differences in SDS scores among postsecondary automotive technology students because SDS scores can be significantly different based on those factors (Fouad & Mohler, 2004;Wakefield et al., 1975). Second, given that turnover is an industry concern (Adler, 2018), understanding the reasons technicians leave the field is another opportunity for future survey or qualitative research. ...
