The focus of this paper is on the impact of ICT on reading culture of students in institutions of higher learning. One of the definitions given to reading habit is that it is the frequency of reading, and the average time spent on reading materials. It was noted that one interesting legacy to hand down to students is teaching them to become lifelong learners through reading and love of books. It was stated that the introduction of ICT, internet, home videos, smart phones and other electronic gadgets have helped to erode reading culture amongst students. This study concentrated more on smartphones. It was noted that ever since the advent of internet, the habit of reading books have been on the decline, chatting became the in-thing. Negative Impacts of Smart Phone Usage by Students during Lectures were outlined among others are: Poor grammar, Reduced Concentration on Academic Activities, etc. It was Concluded that ICTs have come to stay with us but what we make of them will determine the impact they will have on us especially students. This paper examined Utilization of ICT by Postgraduate Students in Ignatius Ajuru University. The study sought to: examine the ICT facilities available for students of Ignatius Ajuru University, Rivers State, Nigeria; find out the extent of utilization of ICT facilities by the students; ascertain reasons for using ICT facilities by the students and examine the challenges to the utilization of ICT facilities by the students. The survey research design was used for this study. The population of this study is made up of 960 postgraduate students in the Faculty of Education in Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rivers State, Nigeria. The sample of the study is 320. Data for this study were gathered using a rating scale while research questions were answered using mean scores. It was discovered that there are ICT facilities available for postgraduate students; they use ICT facilities to a high extent. The main challenges faced by postgraduate students in using ICT facilities are man power and high cost of subscription fee. It is recommended that the government as a matter of urgency should recruit more staff into the University Library. Also the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) should standardize the services of telecommunication firms and also regulate their subscription fees.

1.1 Introduction Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has permeated all nooks and crannies of our society and is applied in all aspects of human life, be it education, health, transportation tourism, trade and commerce, industry and aviation. ICT is an electronic and communication tool invented by man to assist him in the performance of various tasks which ordinarily were cumbersome, time consuming and complex if carried out manually. The university system, among other Abstract This study investigated Influence of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on some Library Services in Libraries of Federal Universities in South-South Nigeria. Two objectives were stated and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Correlational research design was employed in carrying out this study. The population of the study is 169 librarians of South-South Federal Universities in Nigeria. All the 169 librarians from the universities were used for the study. The study made use of two researcher-made rating scales Pearson "r" statistic was used to answer the research questions raised so as to establish the degree of relationships existing between the variables using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21 via the computer while the t-test significance of Pearson "r" statistics was used to test the hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. Result of the analysis revealed that there is a high relationship between availability of ICT facilities and lending services, there is a moderate relationship between availability of ICT facilities and reference services in libraries of Federal University in South-South, Nigeria. All the relationships were found to be significant. It was recommended among others that the government, the management of tertiary institutions and other education stakeholders should be encouraged to take the provision of adequate ICT facilities in all the academic libraries in Nigeria as policy matter. This will enable the libraries to have the needed ICT resources for smooth running of the library hence, their influence to library services.



Reading Culture: An Effective Ingredient for Knowledge Advancement

The place of reading in the general advancement of man and his society cannot be over accentuated. In a society where reading habit and necessary enabling supports are inadequate or vague, the future of such society is threatened. This work is titled reading culture; an effective ingredient for knowledge advancement. One of the definitions given to reading habit is that it is the frequency of reading, and the average time spent on reading materials. It is noted that one interesting legacy to hand down to students is teaching them to become lifelong learners through reading and love of books. Reading skills include: The left to right orientation, letter sound correspondences, avoidance of the influence of mother-tongue and the love to read always.Reading is said to be synonymous with learning and education. It is stated that reading culture is a vital tool for the enhancement of human intellectual abilities and that it may be difficult for a society to attain meaningful development and growth if they do not make reading as part of their culture. It is noted that the issue of declining reading culture among Nigerian students has continued to pose a major challenge to the Government, parents, teachers and the society at large. Illiteracy, poverty, Internet among others were said to be causes of poor reading culture. It is recommended among others that reading should start at the very early stage of a child's life. Parents should also take time out to teach their children on how to read and also cultivate the habit of reading themselves so that their children can see what to emulate.

Information Manager (The)

The study investigated ICT, printing and publishing in Nigeria. The argument is that, ICT cannot replace traditional printing. Literature reviewed revealed that introduction of ICTs into printing and publishing industry has given birth to new strategies in order to operate competitively. The case study research design was used and data was collected using interview. The ECNEL printing services Rumomasi Port Harcourt Rivers state Nigeria was studied. Some negative and positive impact of ICT on printing and publishing were given. It was discovered that ICT present risk and challenges for publishers on the other hand, online activities provide opportunities .Despite the challenges, printers do not feel threatened rather, they foresee a bright future in their business. ICT has cut down processes that are involved in printing and this saves cost, time and gives quality output. Reasons why books are scarce and expensive were given. Challenges posed by ICTs among others are: the new ICT equipments are sophisticated and very expensive, because of the equipments' complexity, their maintenance is very difficult. It was recommended among others that Printers should adopt digital printing into their operation and move with the trend. that is, printers should face the challenges and opportunities posed by ICTs and make them complementary to their functions. It is concluded that digital and traditional printing complement each other and for this reason, traditional printing cannot be faced out because of the advent of ICTs.
