The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of a single stretching session with New Age music or preferred music on the number of stress symptoms in students. Fifty-Nine undergraduate students were separated in the groups: G1 (preferred music) and G2 (New Age). Both G1 and G2 groups answered the Lipp’s Stress Symptoms Inventory (ISS) before and after 15 minutes stretching session with respective musical sequence. The participants with stress were selected: G1 (n=11) and G2 (n=17). The Wilcoxon’s test showed significant differences between the pre- and post-test in both groups indicating reduction of stress, however the Mann Whitney test found no significant differences between groups. It was concluded that single stretching session with preferred music or new age music is an effective intervention and that music preference by itself is not a factor in reduction of stress symptoms.
