This rather Hegelian view of New World nationhood had also been widespread in Latin America, starting from Bolívar's rather romantic views of how colonization can be converted from a source of misery to the natives to a source of benefit to the world (Miller 2004). However, the person who did the most to develop the cosmic race idea in the early twentieth century, linking it explicitly with Lamarck and even Bergson, was Vasconcelos (1997), a lively and controversial figure in his day whom Mexicans now regard as a figure comparable to W.
