... Territorialization premised on environmental management has a long history and lasting legacy (Peluso & Vandergeest, 2001). Many notions of environmental protection began as fortress conservation initiatives promoted by and among states for various purposes, in which designation and regulation of vast territories in the form of national parks commonly took place through land enclosures, dispossession, eviction, and violence (Neumann, 1998;West et al., 2006).
