... In antiquity, burying the dead in shaft tombs had been practised since the Bronze Age (Mare 1998). The Greeks, who preceded the Romans, buried their dead along the roads leading into the city within different kinds of tombs such as shaft tombs, chamber tombs, sarcophagi, etc. (Dinsmoor and Anderson 1973;Kuhnen 1987). They cut the tombs into the face of the solid rock, as well as in sloping rock shelves in valleys (Brown 1948). ...
