The present work is a contrastive study where we analyse the conclusions of a corpus of 36 Linguistics and Applied Linguistics research articles written in Spanish and Slovene, both by native speakers, as well as research articles written in Spanish by Slovene investigators. We focus on the structure of this section following the moves and steps established by Yang and Allison (2003) and Moritz, Meurer and Dellagnelo (2008), as well as the principles used for this kind of analysis settled by the field of intercultural rhetoric (Connor and Moreno, 2005, Moreno, 2008, Connor 2011). The results of our investigation reveal that there are important differences concerning conclusions in research articles between the two languages, which should be taken into account when teaching Spanish as an academic language.

This paper presents the results of a study that, following the precepts of intercultural rhetoric, analyses research articles written in Spanish by Slovenian specialists. The study, framed within a larger research, focuses specifically on the rhetorical movements of the introductions following the CARS model (Swales, 1990, 2004). The results are analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively, contrasting them with those extracted from comparable research articles published by native researchers in Spanish and Slovene. The aim of the research is to establish criteria regarding the differences and similarities of the academic discourse of the Slovene researchers in relation to the native speakers of Spanish, pointing out where didactic applications to solve the existing disparities are needed, in order that their productions will be in line with the expectations of the audience to which they are directed.

Contrastive rhetoric, nowadays redefined as intercultural rhetoric, was born half a century ago with the main purpose of analysing second language earners’ writing in order to propose pedagogical applications that would help to improve it. However, classroom treatments have not been developed as often as they should have. In this paper, we revise the main pedagogical directives established by intercultural rhetoric and we apply them to a case study where we compare the use of ten categories of discourse markers in an expositiveargumentative essay written by Spanish native University students and Slovenian learners of SFL. Even though we reach the conclusion that students from Slovenia use these structures in a similar way to that of the native speakers, we consider that a pedagogical intervention is appropriate to correct some differences. We therefore propose a classroom debate to compare texts from the case study and the contrast of texts written in both mother tongues, as well as the implementation of a telecollaborative course between native speakers and Slovenian University students, which would aid the understanding of discourse markers and other aspects of Spanish usage.

Intercultural rhetoric is a discipline which studies written discourse among individuals from different cultures. It is a very strong field in the Anglo-Saxon scientific world, especially referring to English as a second language, but in Spanish as a foreign language it is not as prominent. Intercultural rhetoric has provided applied linguistics with important methods of investigation, thus applying this to SFL could introduce interesting new perspectives on the subject. In this paper, we present the methodology of investigation of intercultural rhetoric, which is based on the use of different types of corpora for analysing genders, and follows the precepts of tertium comparationis. In addition, it uses techniques of ethnographic investigation. The purpose of this paper is to show the applications of this methodology to SFL and to outline future investigations in the same field.
