In 2022, at the last summit in Samarkand, the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) continued the path of its transformation, which commenced at the Istanbul Summit held in 2021. Turkey seeks to retain the role of a leading state in the OTS, trying to expand political, diplomatic, trade, economic, investment, cultural and humanitarian cooperation with the Central Asian countries. In addition, Hungary has observer status in the OTS and uses "non-Western" organizations to reveal its position on various foreign-policy issues. During the recent years there has been a convergence between Turkey and Hungary based on sharing of conservative views and criticism towards the European Union’s stance. At the same time, Ankara has been seeking to redouble the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) by lobbying for the granting the observer status in the OTS. Therefore, the aim of this article is to review the role and influence of the Samarkand Summit on further transformation of the OTS.
