The consistency and parallel findings in the ASWB and current study reveal a concerning pattern, especially when licensing exams are considered within the broader context of formal, standardized exams. In contrast to most standardized exams such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) in which Asian-American candidates often outperform all other candidates (Reglin & Adams, 1990), in both our study and the ASWB study, white candidates had an 11-12% higher pass rate than Asian-Americans, indicating that a different testing dynamic may be at play with licensing exams compared with traditional high-stakes college exams.
