... Species of Merragata occur in standing water, inhabiting the water surface and floating aquatic plants and sometimes venturing underwater (Drake, 1917). The common European species, Hebrus (Hebrusella) ruficeps, similarly lives in hanging mats of Sphagnum at the margins of acidic bog ponds (Southwood & Leston, 1959). At the other ecological extreme, the two species of Nieserius are unique among gerromorphan bugs in inhabiting gravel amid the benthos of swift Asian streams, breathing by use of plastron respiration and possibly never surfacing (Zettel, 1999). ...
