Within scholarship on language learning and SA, researchers primarily have employed a variationist SLA framework to conceptualize and examine how students learn sociolinguistic variants as part of their development of sociolinguistic competence in the TL variety spoken in a host community (Geeslin & Long, 2014;Regan et al., 2009). As a key dimension of communicative competence, sociolinguistic competence is a theoretical construct based on Hymes' (1972Hymes' ( , 1974 insight that learners must acquire knowledge not only of what is grammatical but also the appropriateness of linguistic forms within the sociocultural contexts where they are used and evaluated by members of a speech community.
