The Paris agreement calls for limiting global warming well below 2°C. In this context, the “4 per 1000 Initiative: Soils for Food Security and Climate” was launched with a threefold objective: to contribute to the mitigation of and to the adaptation to climate change and to improve food security through soil organic carbon sequestration. One of the main challenges of the Initiative relates to its implementation in contrasted social and economic environments. Two participatory multi-stakeholder workshops were organized in France and Senegal to collect knowledge and perception of actors on (i) local constraints to the adoption of innovations serving the 4 per 1000 objectives and (ii) identification of the possible actions to lift these barriers. Results showed that most of the constraints were shared between the two regions, mostly related to the enabling environment. These findings pledge for a holistic approach based on Agricultural Innovation System, to expand the 4 per 1000 Initiative and for the development of a “territorial” approach to address the governance challenges related to the initiative. Finally, its deployment is not specific and experiences related to sustainable intensification of agricultural systems could be useful to feed the current discussions on the dissemination of the Initiative.
