There are as many different versions, perceptions and means of interaction with ‘global cultural forces’ as there are locales and social groups in the world. Central to these are translocal and transnational pathways and their intersections, the routes along which cultural influences travel and operate. These include migration, travel and diaspora; transnational solidarities that cross ethnic, political and religious boundaries (including international non-governmental organisations, INGOS) and the media. In this chapter we explore specific global cultural influences and the pathways along which they operate in the particular contexts of Irish, Kurdish and Islamist self-determination movements (SDMs).
