... How is such an image negotiated and/or contested by the participants in these classes? To answer these questions, we draw upon a framework that brings together theorisations of the discursive construction of the nation (Bhabha 1990;Billig 1995;Calhoun 2017;Triandafyllidou 1998) with Bakhtin's (1981) notion of the chronotope and Shenhav's (2015) 'social narratives'. With the help of this analytical apparatus, we show how narratives within civic orientation are characterised by two main spatiotemporal moves that discursively construct Sweden as a nation-state: (1) a temporal, historical narrative and (2) a spatial dichotomy between 'here' and 'there'. ...
