The chapter explores Foucault's notion of heterotopia to rethink the functions and meanings of waste urban infrastructures, based on narratives of waste from the cities of Managua in Nicaragua and Gothenburg in Sweden. Based on ethnographic research, the chapter explores how, by isolating and hiding waste, waste infrastructures make possible the utopia of a well-functioning city. The chapter also discusses how efficient waste infrastructures can contribute to hide the consequences of the consumption and discard society by obscuring the link between consumption and the increasing overflow of waste.
