... Introduction to the Case The 1970s were the golden age of the radical left in Turkey, with public support for socialist groups and organizations reaching unprecedented levels. In line with the modernization perspective, academics generally explain this mass radicalism by the dramatic social transformations the country underwent after World War II (e.g., Dodd 1983;Zürcher 1993). Indeed, the decades following the war witnessed dizzying changes in Turkey, including the transition from a single-party regime to multiparty elections, the commercialization of agriculture, rapid urbanization, the growth of an industrial working class, increased secondary and higher education enrollment, and the development of communication and transportation infrastructures that connected the countryside to the national market. ...
