... Various biodiversity indices are available to measure the status of biodiversity and biodiversity change at global, national and city scales (McRae et al., 2017;Chan et al., 2021;IUCN, 2022;IUCN, 2023;WWF, 2022;WWF, 2024), most of which focus on species populations. However, as biodiversity is defined as a multifaceted term, encompassing the spectrum of biotic variation from the level of genes to ecosystems (Groombridge, 1992), no single measure of biodiversity can capture all its dimensions (Pereira et al., 2010). In order to develop a global standard for biodiversity monitoring to quantify biodiversity change that covers the most important dimensions of biodiversity, the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON, 2015) developed the concept of Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs), which are organised into six classes: Genetic composition, Species populations, Species traits, Community composition, Ecosystem functioning, and Ecosystem structure (Pereira et al., 2013;GEO BON, 2015). ...
