... As part of our line of research on fructanogenic extremophiles, levan production by the third domain of life, halophilic Archaea, was also discovered recently (Kırtel et al., 2019). Furthermore, having reported Halomonas smyrnensis AAD6 T as the first halophilic producer and novel species to produce levan at high titers (Poli et al., 2009), our subsequent studies unveiled that the Halomonas levan produced by this strain displays anti-oxidant, anti-cancer (Sarilmiser and Oner, 2014) and heparin-mimetic activities (Erginer et al., 2016). Also, it could serve as bioflocculating agent (Sam et al., 2011) and functional biomaterial in many high value applications such as drug carrier systems (Sezer et al., 2011(Sezer et al., , 2015Mutlu et al., 2021), laser deposited nanostructured bioactive surfaces (Axente et al., 2014;Sima et al., 2011Sima et al., , 2012, adhesive multilayer (Costa et al., 2013) and blend films (Bostan et al., 2014), hydrogels for controlled drug release (Osman et al., 2017;Demirci et al., 2020;Bahadori et al., 2019), tissue engineering applications (Gomes et al., 2018;Avsar et al., 2018), an adsorbent material for the removal of bisphenol-A (Hacıosmanoglu et al., 2019) and a paper conservation material (Saglam et al., 2020). ...
