They used either an empirical temperature-precipitation approach or a degree-day method to distinguish between solid (snow) and liquid (rain) precipitation (e.g. Tsarev and Vedernikova, 2005;Yakovlev, 2005;Tsarev, 2006;Merkushin and Tsarev, 2007).
