Ayman al Zawahiri, the second most important leader of al Qaeda, has in recent years become the public face and voice of the organization. He has appeared on more tapes and issued more public statements than Osama bin Laden. Although the internal dynamics of the organization and the current condition of bin Laden are largely unknown, Zawahiri, a veteran jihadist and al Qaeda’s theoretician, sometimes seems to be the person in charge.
