Hyphaene thebaica honey, commonly known as doum honey (DH), is widely utilized in the Mediterranean region due to its putative health benefits. However, the precise mechanisms underpinning these benefits remain obscure. This study sought to assess the anti-infective, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties of DH, and analyze its polyphenolic composition. The antibacterial effects of DH were tested against a range of multidrug-resistant Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. In addition, we investigated the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer activities of DH in the MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cell line. The phenolic compounds in DH were evaluated using quantitative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The model used to assess the anti-inflammatory properties was lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated macrophages. HPLC analysis revealed nine phenolic compounds in DH: Gallic acid, caffeic acid, carvacrol, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, kaempferol, pinobanksin, pinocembrin, and galangin. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for DH varied between 0.19% and 0.78% w/w for the three Gram-positive strains tested and between 0.024% and 0.39% w/w for the four Gram-negative strains tested. Among all the bacterial strains tested, Escherichia coli was found to be the most susceptible, with an MIC of 0.024% w/w. Upon treating LPS-activated THP-1-derived macrophages with DH, the levels of nitric oxide were significantly diminished. Moreover, DH displayed a modest but significant cytostatic effect on the MDA-MB-231 cells. The most noticeable cytostatic impacts were observed at concentrations of 4 mg/mL and 2 mg/mL, resulting in a decrease in cell viability by 25% and 20%, respectively, compared to untreated control cells. A significant decline in the migration rate of MDA-MB-231 cells was observed following DH treatment compared to control cells (P < 0.05). Our findings not only corroborate the well-established antibacterial properties of DH but also imply that its recognized anticancer advantages may be partially attributed to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytostatic, and antimigration effects.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the chemical composition antioxidant activity, and diuretic effects of Moroccan Pinus pinaster bark ethanolic extract (PPBE). Materials and Methods: The phytochemical composition of PPBE was assessed using HPLC-DAD. Total polyphenols and flavonoids were quantified using the Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminum trichloride methods, respectively, while mineral content was determined by plasma mass spectrometry. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the reducing power assay, total antioxidant capacity, and anti-DPPH free radical assay. For the diuretic effect, sixteen male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control (distilled water, 10 ml/kg of BW), furosemide (10 mg/kg of BW), and PPBE (200 and 400 mg/kg of BW) groups. After 15 days, plasma and urine were collected for creatinine, potassium, and sodium analysis, along with urine output measurement. Statistical analysis employed one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey multiple comparison test. Results: The PPBE displayed high phenolic content and potent antioxidant properties. Besides, the PPBE phenolic screening showed nine phenolic compounds with ferulate glucoside, gallic acid, and catechin as the main compounds. The PPBE demonstrated a richness in essential minerals. Furthermore, at both doses (200 and 400 mg/kg) PPBE led to a notable elevation in urine flow, urinary sodium concentration, and creatinine clearance, without affecting plasma electrolytes. In contrast, furosemide caused a reduction in plasma potassium levels. Conclusion: PPBE could serve as a bioactive component, antioxidant, or preservative in food formulation. Moreover, it exhibits a diuretic effect without altering plasma composition.

The present study evaluates the physicochemical attributes, antibacterial efficacy, and antioxidant capacities of four distinct varieties of honey from the West Bank region of Palestine: Assal Barsem (Medicago sativa) AB, Assal Morar (Centaurea dumulosa Boiss) AM, Assal Horfesh (Silybum) AH, and Assal Sader (Ziziphus spina-christi) AS. The analysis encompassed parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, Total Flavonoid Content (TFC), and Total Phenolic Content (TPC). Furthermore, the antioxidant potential was gauged through Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) determination and the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. In addition, the antibacterial effectiveness of the honeys was measured against a spectrum of bacterial strains including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Bacillus subtilis, utilizing minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentrations (MBC). The outcomes of the physicochemical analysis adhered to the quality benchmarks outlined by the European Union Commission and the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The MIC and MBC values exhibited notable variance across the tested honey varieties, with MIC values ranging from 0.024% w/w to 1.56% w/w, and MBC values ranging from 0.048% w/w to 3.15% w/w. Particularly, AH demonstrated superior efficacy against all seven bacterial strains, with MIC values spanning from 0.1 to 0.6% w/w, and MBC values ranging from 0.3% w/w to 0.8% w/w. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were notably susceptible to all honey samples. Collectively, our findings underscore the therapeutic potential of Palestinian honey varieties, highlighting their multifaceted health-promoting attributes. Further exploration is warranted to elucidate the mechanistic underpinnings of bioactive constituents and explore their potential applications in healthcare.

Unveiling the molecular composition and biological properties of essential oil derived from the leaves of wild Mentha aquatica L.: A comprehensive in vitro and in silico exploration

The purpose of the current study is to assess the chemical profile, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and insecticide efficacy of essential oil derived from the leaf of Moroccan Mentha aquatica L. (MA-EO) using in vitro and in silico analysis. Using GC-MS/MS analysis, 18 components of MA-EO were identified, including linalool (42.42%), α-elemol (10.45%), α-terpineol (8.07%), linalyl acetate (7.37%), and caryophyllene (4.05%). Additionally, MA-EO has a strong antioxidant capacity with IC50 values of 0.64 ± 0.01 µg/mL using the DPPH assay and 0.167 ± 0.13 µg/mL using the ABTS test. Total antioxidant capacity activities were found to be 188.21 ± 0.31 mg EAA/g, while RP activities were 1.95 ± 0.023. The powerful antibacterial properties of MA-EO were proven to be effective against Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. MA-EO showed insecticidal potential using the fumigation experiment, with an LC50 of 3.33 μL/L in the air after 24 h of exposure. At a dose of 20 µL/mL, MA-EO reduced fertility, fecundity, and emergence of adult C. maculatus. MA-EO had 95% mortality at the same dosage. In silico analysis revealed that the antioxidant activity of MA-EO is linked to γ-eudesmol, while its antibacterial efficacy is associated with phenol, 2,4-di-tert-butyl-, and its antifungal capacity with phenol, 2,4-di-tert-butyl-. MA-EO demonstrates potent bactericidal, fungicidal, and bioinsecticide properties, making it effective for controlling bacteria, fungi, and insect pests in stored grains.

Laurus nobilis L. is one of the most interesting medicinal plants for treating different diseases. The present study was undertaken to determine the volatile profile and biological properties of Laurus nobilis L. collected from different Moroccan geographical zones. The plants investigated contained considerable amounts of antioxidants. The phytochemistry analysis showed a high variability of bioactive compounds found in both samples under study with abundance of eucalyptol (39.12%), α-terpinyl acetate (15.83%), methyleugenol (7.77%), and α-terpineol (4.74%) for sample collected from Sfrou, whereas (1R,4aR,7R,8aR)-7-(2-hydroxypropan-2-yl) (18.62%), and methyleugenol (15.84%) were the major components detected from sample originated from Akchour and did not possess hepatotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and carcinogenicity. Staphylococcus aureus was the most sensitive bacteria and registered a diameter of inhibition of 30 mm for EO from Akchour and 25 from Sefrou with a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1/640. Both samples under study showed moderate antifungal activity against C. albicans and S. cerevisiae.

Honey is a valuable functional bee product used since ancient times for its nutritional and therapeutic properties. Microbial characteristics of honey are among the main criteria analyzed to ensure the quality and safety of this bee product. In addition, the rheological properties of honey are important physical parameters that offer essential data to control the improvement of industrial processes as well as the quality and authenticity of honey. There are two assays, including steady shear and dynamic shear tests, frequently used to determine the rheological characteristics of honey in liquid and crystalized states. Furthermore, the thermal property of honey is another important parameter evaluated frequently by glass transition temperature and melting temperature. For this reason, the present chapter describes the microbial quality, thermal properties, and rheological features of liquid and crystallized honey.
